How to teach an adult to play the piano?

No matter why an adult man suddenly wanted to learn how to play the piano, everyone has their own motivation. The main thing is that the decision is considered and own. This is really a big plus, because in childhood many are forced to play music "under the lash" of their parents, which is not conducive to successful learning.

Another advantage of an adult in the accumulated knowledge and intelligence is that it is much easier for him to understand the abstraction of recording music. This replaces the “big” students with the childlike flexibility of thinking and the ability to “absorb” information.

But there is one significant drawback: with the dream of virtuoso possession of the instrument, you can immediately say goodbye - an adult will never be able to “catch up” with a student from childhood. This concerns not only the fluency of the fingers, but also the technical apparatus in general. In music, as in big-time sports, mastery is gained through years of training.

What is needed for training?

Adult learning to play the piano has its own subtleties. Before the teacher, successfully teaching only children to this, the problem will inevitably arise - what and how to teach, and what is required for this.

In principle, any manual for beginners will do — from Nikolayev’s legendary “School of Piano Playing” (how many generations have you learned!) To “Reader for 1st grade.” A notebook and a pencil will not be superfluous, for many adults, memorization is much more productive through writing. And of course the tool itself.

If it is extremely desirable for children to study on the good old piano (the ultimate dream is the piano), then an electronic piano or even a synthesizer is quite suitable for an adult. After all, the subtlety of the nuances of the touch of a long-formed hand is unlikely to be needed, at least for the first time.

First classes

So, the training is over. How specifically to learn an adult on the piano? At the first lesson, you should give all the basic information regarding pitch organization of notes and their records. For this, a double music staff with treble and bass keys is drawn in a music notebook. Between them - the note "BEFORE" 1st octave, our "stove", from which we will dance. Then the matter of technology is to explain how all the other notes diverge from this "TO", both in the recording and on the instrument.

For a normal adult brain, it will not be extremely difficult to learn this all at once. Another question is that it will take more than one month to fasten the reading of notes to automatism, until a clear chain of "I saw, I played" will not form in my head at the sight of the musical notation. Intermediate links of this chain (calculated what note, found it on the instrument, etc.) should eventually die off as atavisms.

The second lesson can be devoted rhythmic music organization. Again, a person who has studied mathematics for more than one year of his life (at least within the school) should have no problems with the concepts of duration, size, meter. But to understand is one thing, and to rhythmically reproduce is another. Difficulties may arise here, because the sense of rhythm is either given or not. Develop it is much more difficult than the ear for music, especially in adulthood.

Thus, for the first two classes, an adult student can and should “dump” all the most basic, basic information. Let him digest.

Learning from the hands

If a person does not have a great desire to learn to play the piano, and he would just like to “flash” somewhere with the performance of a hit, he can be taught to play a particular piece “from the hands”. Depending on the stubbornness, the level of complexity of the work can be very different - from Beethoven's Dog Waltz to Lunar Sonata. But, of course, this is an incomplete teaching of adults to play the piano, and the similarity of training (as in the famous film: "Of course, you can teach a hare to smoke ...")
